Bénin and Niger lift barriers to boost bilateral ties

On Tuesday, June 2, Cotonou and Niamey reaffirmed their commitment to deepen collaboration across multiple sectors during an official visit by Bénin’s President Romuald Wadagni to Niger. The trip, extended at the invitation of Niger’s President Abdourahamane Tiani, marked a pivotal moment in bilateral relations.

A joint statement released after the meeting highlighted the Presidents’ shared conviction that political, economic, scientific, and cultural cooperation must be strengthened. They agreed to intensify mutual exchanges, particularly through regular meetings of the Niger-Bénin Joint Cooperation Commission.

Both leaders pledged to eliminate all obstacles hindering bilateral cooperation, with a priority on reopening the Bénin-Niger border. The crossing, long closed due to past tensions, had severely disrupted human movement and local economic activities.

To turn this political will into action, they established an expert committee tasked with identifying these barriers and proposing solutions within 15 days. The committee’s findings will guide future steps to restore seamless cooperation.

The discussions between Wadagni and Tiani, joined by their delegations, unfolded in a warm and constructive atmosphere. The leaders conducted a thorough review of shared challenges, including regional and international developments shaping their agendas.

They celebrated the long-standing bonds of friendship and cooperation between Niger and Bénin, vowing to elevate bilateral ties to meet the aspirations of their citizens—peace, security, and sustainable development.

Elected just weeks earlier on May 24, President Wadagni has made restoring neighborly relations a cornerstone of his agenda. He extended an official invitation to President Tiani to reciprocate the visit in Bénin, signaling a new chapter of mutual engagement.
