During a high-level visit to Ouagadougou, the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission underscored the urgent need for Burkina Faso to expedite its return to constitutional governance by holding elections and reopening the political space. The call comes as the regional bloc continues to prioritize dialogue with the transitional authorities while reinforcing support for the country’s counterterrorism efforts.

The AU official, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, held meetings with Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister, Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, and Foreign Minister, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré. Notably, no discussions were held with the transitional president, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, during this visit.

In a statement following the talks, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf emphasized that despite the suspension of Burkina Faso’s participation in AU political bodies following the 2022 coup, the organization remains committed to constructive engagement with the transitional government. He reiterated the AU’s backing for the country’s fight against violent extremism and its ongoing development initiatives.

The AU Chairperson stressed that the political transition must culminate in the revival of political parties, the reopening of democratic space, and the organization of credible elections to restore constitutional order. He also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation, urging Burkina Faso to work more closely with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which the country left in early 2025 alongside Mali and Niger to form the Sahel States Confederation (AES).

In a joint communiqué, the AU reaffirmed its commitment to Burkina Faso’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. The Burkinabe government, represented by the Prime Minister, pledged to support institutional reforms within the continental body and strengthen its financial autonomy.

This visit was part of a broader regional tour by the AU Commission Chairperson, who previously met with transitional leaders in Mali.
