In Yaoundé, Cameroon’s bustling capital, advanced surveillance cameras are playing a pivotal role. They significantly contribute to crime deterrence, safeguard both property and individuals, and streamline traffic flow across the city.
Since their strategic deployment in key areas of the political capital, residents have observed a remarkable improvement in the fight against insecurity. A resident from the Madagascar neighborhood enthusiastically shared, «Our neighborhood used to be plagued by constant robberies. Criminals would burst in at any time, ransacking shops, banks, and bakeries with impunity. But since the installation of these surveillance cameras, such incidents have become far less common. I am truly grateful to the authorities for this initiative.»
The network of surveillance cameras throughout Yaoundé is expertly managed by the National Command Center for Video Surveillance, strategically located in the Etoudi district.
Recognizing their proven effectiveness in curbing criminal activity, President Paul Biya took a decisive step. On December 17, 2025, he signed a decree authorizing the Minister of Economy, Alamine Ousmane Mey, to secure a fresh loan of 39.2 billion FCFA. This substantial funding is earmarked for the «complementary financing of the national expansion project for the intelligent urban video surveillance system.»
With this latest financial injection, the government is preparing to engage its fourth credit line dedicated to this ambitious project. Over an eight-year period, a total of 150.8 billion FCFA has been mobilized through three Chinese financial partners.
The initial phase of this extensive project saw the installation of 1,500 video surveillance cameras across various Cameroonian cities. This robust network was further bolstered by the deployment of 2,000 portable transceivers, significantly enhancing the police force’s surveillance and intervention capabilities.
Beyond urban centers and sensitive border regions, surveillance cameras are increasingly being adopted for private use. «Before installing this system at my home, I was a frequent victim of burglaries,» confided a private citizen who invested in such a security device. «Today, I am completely satisfied. Any bandits who dare to trespass are systematically identified, and the justice system takes over from there.»
The average cost for a surveillance camera starts around 15,000 FCFA, varying based on the desired model and features. These versatile devices can be installed not only in private residences and public spaces but also in plantations, vehicles, and even schools, contributing to the safety of everyone.
This cutting-edge technology empowers users to remotely monitor their assets and premises through various platforms, including smartphones, television screens, and other connected devices.
