Journalist Chahana Takiou arrested following comments on ruling junta
The media landscape in Bamako is reeling following the detention of Chahana Takiou, the director of the bi-weekly newspaper “22 septembre.” On Monday afternoon, Takiou was remanded in custody after appearing before the prosecutor of the specialized unit for combatting cybercrime. This legal action follows his outspoken remarks during the recent Panafrican Media Forum held in the Malian capital from June 3 to 6.
Legal authorities have formally charged the journalist with “undermining the credit of the State through the judicial institution.” His trial is currently set to take place on July 27. Family members have also confirmed that he is being held following the court summons.
The tension originated during a forum panel led by prosecutor Idrissa Hamidou Touré. Takiou used the platform to voice his dissatisfaction with the current political climate, stating that a genuine peace process is non-existent in Mali. He specifically criticized the authorities for their tendency to prosecute journalists under cybercrime statutes rather than utilizing the legal framework specifically dedicated to press offenses.
In response to the arrest, the Maison de la Presse in Mali released a statement expressing profound worry and confusion. The organization, alongside several media advocacy groups, condemned the detention order as a heavy-handed blow to freedom of expression. They argued that such actions tarnish the image of both the judiciary and the Malian press, calling the move a clear and grave infringement on fundamental journalistic liberties.
