US cracks down on rebel commanders fueling chaos in eastern DRC

The United States has imposed fresh sanctions on key figures behind the ongoing insurgency in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Washington’s move targets high-ranking commanders from two armed factions—the FDLR (Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda) and the M23 (March 23 Movement)—both of which have been active since 2021.

In an official statement, a State Department spokesperson highlighted the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that these groups have systematically undermined regional stability. «These sanctions send a clear message that the United States will not tolerate violence, human rights abuses, or destabilizing actions that threaten peace in the region,» the spokesperson declared.

Among those targeted is Gustave Kubwayo, an FDLR commander accused of orchestrating ethnic violence against civilians, deploying child soldiers, and carrying out cross-border raids that endanger Rwanda’s security. The US also sanctioned John Imani Nzenze, the M23’s intelligence chief, who is alleged to have overseen killings, widespread human rights violations, and deliberate attacks on Congolese civilians.

The Trump administration reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the Washington Accords of December 4, 2025, and the Doha Framework, warning that it will deploy all available measures to curb instability in the Great Lakes region. «We are resolved to hold all parties accountable for their commitments and restore lasting peace,» the administration stated.
