Dakar’s legislative agenda takes shape as key deadlines loom
Following the Conference of Presidents (CDP) convened this past Friday in Dakar, Senegal’s National Assembly has finalized a packed legislative calendar. Two major draft laws—revisions to the Labour Code and the Social Security Code—are set for committee review this Saturday, June 20, with full plenary debates scheduled for Monday, June 22.
The most closely watched development, however, revolves around the constitutional review proposal. Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly, addressed the Bureau of the Assembly in detail, revealing that the mandatory presidential feedback on the proposal had yet to be received. Despite formal submission to the Presidency, no official response has been provided to date.
An ultimatum to the Executive
In response to the delay, Sonko has imposed a firm deadline: Monday, June 22. Should the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, fail to provide the required assessment by then, the Bureau of the National Assembly will immediately convene to advance the legislative process. Sonko has made it clear that his intention is to ensure the constitutional review proposal is examined and voted on before the close of the current ordinary session.
The Assembly’s leadership also highlighted two pending financial texts—the rectified Finance Bill (LFR) and the Budget Orientation Debate (DOB)—both of which were approved by the Council of Ministers weeks ago but remain unpresented to Parliament. The clock is now ticking between the legislative and executive branches of government.
This evolving situation will continue to unfold in the coming days.
