In a candid account, Ousmane Sonko, former Prime Minister of Senegal and leader of the PASTEF-Les Patriotes party, has publicly outlined the events leading to his dismissal from the head of government. Speaking to the press, he detailed a conversation he claims took place with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye prior to his removal from office.
Key moments that sealed his fate
The turning point, according to Sonko, occurred on May 25. He explained that he was summoned by the Head of State following a speech he delivered at the National Assembly.
In their discussion, the President reportedly expressed concerns about the growing tensions stemming from statements made in the parliamentary chamber, suggesting that continuing their collaboration would prove increasingly difficult.
Sonko maintained that the meeting unfolded in a typical setting before the inevitable topic of ending their partnership at the helm of the government was broached.
Anticipating the separation
The former Prime Minister insisted he had, on multiple occasions, raised the possibility of stepping down from his executive role after the legislative elections.
He recounted proposing to the President two potential paths forward: either returning to his parliamentary duties to allow for the appointment of a new Prime Minister, or engaging in further negotiations to reach a mutually agreeable political resolution.
However, he emphasized that the President had consistently dismissed this suggestion until their final exchange.
Signs of strain in the executive branch
Sonko revealed that for weeks, he had noticed growing friction between the two leaders. He claimed to have raised these concerns with the President during several meetings, though he noted that no concrete plans were discussed during their last encounter regarding the terms of their separation.
The former head of government also stated that he had refused to endorse a political narrative framing his departure as a harmonious transition.
The dismissal is confirmed
According to his account, the President had indicated they would revisit the matter after a planned visit to the Archbishop of Dakar during Pentecost celebrations. Yet, Sonko recalled receiving a message that same evening announcing his dismissal.
Shortly after, he learned of the official announcement confirming his removal, made by the Secretary-General of the Presidency.
What lies ahead for Sonko
With his return to the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko is set to embark on a new chapter in his political career. This development also signals a significant shift in the dynamic between the former Prime Minister and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, whose alliance had previously reshaped the political landscape of Senegal.
Sonko’s account provides a fresh perspective amid ongoing scrutiny of the evolving power dynamics within Senegal’s leadership.
