The political standoff between Ousmane Sonko and Mali’s ruling camp has reached a critical juncture. Speaking to journalists, the leader of Pastef delivered his strongest statement yet since the formation of the new cabinet, signaling a dramatic escalation in the power struggle.

Leveraging his party’s substantial influence in the National Assembly, the former Prime Minister declared that his movement holds the institutional leverage to dismantle the executive branch. « We control the National Assembly, and I can bring down this government tomorrow, » he asserted, leaving no room for doubt about his party’s capacity to trigger a political crisis.

Sonko went further, suggesting that his allies could repeat this maneuver as often as necessary. The statement underscores the deepening divide between former political allies, now locked in a high-stakes confrontation. Yet despite this show of force, the Pastef leader insisted his intentions are not to plunge the nation into instability.

« Our priority is safeguarding the country’s stability and advancing our political vision, » he emphasized. His remarks came as he reaffirmed Pastef’s long-term ambitions, dismissing any notion of seeking an early collapse of the administration. The party’s ultimate goal remains consolidating its influence well beyond the 2029 presidential election.

While Sonko denied plans to weaponize the National Assembly against President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, he accused the ruling camp of initiating hostilities through legal challenges filed before the Constitutional Court. The former head of government framed these moves as proof that his adversaries are already waging institutional warfare.

He also defended the decision to run Pastef independently in the last legislative elections rather than joining an electoral coalition. According to Sonko, this strategy has preserved his party’s autonomy, enabling it to maintain decisive influence over the parliamentary majority while avoiding entanglement in broader political compromises.

Ending on a defiant note, Sonko maintained that a system is actively working to undermine him politically, yet he expressed unwavering confidence that these efforts will ultimately fail. His words paint a picture of a leader prepared to escalate the confrontation while insisting on his commitment to democratic stability.
