Senegal: Ousmane Sonko elected president of the National Assembly
Ousmane Sonko was elected on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, as President of Senegal’s National Assembly just four days after being dismissed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

Leader of the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF) party, which holds power, Sonko secured 132 votes out of the 133 cast. He takes over from El Malick Ndiaye, who resigned from the position last Sunday.

On Monday evening, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as the new Prime Minister. Lô previously served as Minister in charge of Monitoring, Guidance and Evaluation of the ‘National Transformation Program for Senegal 2050’ under the presidency, before becoming Secretary-General of the Senegalese government.
