The political landscape in Senegal is buzzing with anticipation as President Bassirou Diomaye Faye prepares to welcome former leader Macky Sall this Friday, July 17, 2026. Speculation is rife about the implications of this unexpected rapprochement, but political analyst Moussa Diaw dismisses any notion that it could weaken Ousmane Sonko’s deep-rooted popularity.

strategic interests behind the meeting

This high-stakes encounter at the Palais de l’Avenue Roume is far from a mere courtesy call. According to Professor Moussa Diaw, an esteemed political scientist at the Université Gaston-Berger in Saint-Louis, both leaders are pursuing calculated political agendas.

For President Diomaye Faye, who is set to launch his own political party on August 8 after severing ties with Ousmane Sonko, the meeting is part of a broader strategy to secure endorsements ahead of the 2027 local elections and the 2029 presidential race. “Diomaye Faye is in a political position where he needs allies,” Diaw notes.

For Macky Sall, the stakes are twofold. Beyond aiming to secure official state backing for his bid to become United Nations Secretary-General, the leader of the Alliance for the Republic (APR) is also seeking to revive his party’s financial standing. “This return could enable the APR to forge alliances with Diomaye, granting access to critical resources. Losing power means losing financial leverage, and political influence in Senegal thrives on clientelism.”

Sonko maintains his grip on the streets

Critics argue that Diomaye Faye’s alliance with the former regime is an attempt to sideline Ousmane Sonko, but Diaw strongly disagrees. The Pastef leader, who commands a parliamentary majority, continues to command unwavering support from the grassroots.

“Sonko’s popularity remains untouched”

To underscore his point, Diaw points to Sonko’s recent nationwide tour, where his ability to mobilize was on full display:

  • Unshakable enthusiasm: The inauguration of the Pastef headquarters in Touba drew massive crowds, proving Sonko’s enduring influence.
  • Youth backing: The overwhelming support from Senegal’s youth serves as the bedrock of his political strength.

Despite the political turbulence at the highest levels, Ousmane Sonko retains control over the most dynamic voting bloc in the country, setting the stage for a contentious electoral battle in the coming years.
