The 16th annual gathering of the association dedicated to assisting the village of Forgho in northern Mali took place recently, highlighting a commitment that remains unshaken by regional turmoil.
A somber reality on the ground
Opening the session with a heartfelt address, the president, Marie-Jo Mennelet, detailed the increasingly grim situation currently facing Mali. The country is navigating through a period of extreme difficulty, marked by the persistent threat of jihadist activity, systemic failures in water and electricity services, and a sharp rise in the cost of basic goods. These challenges, coupled with intense heatwaves, have made daily life exceptionally grueling for the local population.
Educational resilience in Forgho
Despite the concerning Mali security news, the association has maintained its steadfast connection with its partners in Forgho and Bamako. A notable success is that the schools in Forgho and Kotchekaraï have remained open. This stands in sharp contrast to many other educational institutions across the northern and central parts of the country that have been forced to shut down. While no new individual sponsorships were initiated this year, existing commitments have been upheld thanks to the unwavering generosity of local donors.
Tangible impact of financial aid
The funds raised have been instrumental in providing essential resources. These include:
- School supplies and funding for the student canteen.
- Support for DEF examination fees.
- Provision of medications and agricultural seeds.
- Infrastructure repairs and maintenance in the villages.
The organization’s financial health remains stable, bolstered by contributions gathered during local cultural events, such as concerts and theater plays. These resources are prioritized for educational support, health needs, and the operation of an orphanage in Bamako, as well as providing direct assistance to families and teaching staff.
The general assembly concluded with the unanimous approval of the moral and financial reports, followed by the re-election of the board. The members shared a convivial moment to close the meeting, reaffirming their dedication to their Malian counterparts.
