french intelligence officer sentenced in Bamako amid malian-french tensions

Diplomatic tensions rise as a French intelligence officer, held for nearly ten months in Bamako, receives a 20-year prison sentence for “undermining state security.”

In a significant development for Mali current affairs, a Malian court on Friday handed down a 20-year prison term to a French intelligence agent with diplomatic status. The individual, who had been in detention in Bamako for almost ten months, was found guilty of “undermining state security.” France has vehemently rejected the verdict, labeling the accusations as “unfounded.”

The French national, arrested in August 2025, faced charges of conspiring against the institutions of the Sahelian nation, which is currently governed by a military junta with strained relations with France. In addition to the prison sentence, the court imposed a 20-year ban from Malian territory and a fine of 5,400 euros, according to judicial sources familiar with the Bamako news.

Closed-door proceedings

The trial took place on Thursday before the criminal chamber of the specialized anti-terrorism court, with the judgment announced the following day. Sources confirm that the proceedings were conducted behind closed doors, offering little public insight into the evidence presented.

The individual, identified as Yann V., was apprehended on August 13, 2025, during an operation carried out by the Sécurité d’État (SE), Mali’s national intelligence agency. This event quickly became a focal point in Mali security news.

Despite his official assignment to the French Embassy in Bamako, the French officer was arrested alongside several officers from the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa). These Malian officers, who have since been dismissed from service, are yet to face trial.

They are accused of establishing an espionage network and plotting a coup d’état aimed at destabilizing Mali’s transitional institutions. This ongoing situation highlights the complexities of Mali politics today.

“Unfounded accusations” from Paris

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously called for the immediate release of its citizen, describing the allegations as baseless and without merit. This latest development is expected to further strain diplomatic ties between Mali and France.
