The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is sounding the alarm over a severe deterioration of the humanitarian crisis in Mali, as widespread insecurity cripples transport routes and jeopardizes the lives of millions already in distress.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has issued a stark warning regarding a significant escalation of armed violence across Mali since late April. According to the humanitarian organization, a surge in coordinated attacks and pervasive insecurity on critical road networks is severely disrupting the movement of people and vital goods, including fuel and essential food supplies destined for Bamako.

This escalating security crisis is compounding the hardships faced by communities already grappling with a protracted humanitarian emergency. Access to fundamental services is becoming increasingly challenging, while vulnerable families confront an expanding array of risks.

“a climate of fear and profound uncertainty”

Matias Meier, the IRC’s Operations Director in Mali, confirms a marked deterioration in the situation over recent weeks.

“Over the past two weeks, our teams have observed a growing sense of fear and deep uncertainty among families who have already endured years of profound crisis,” he explains.

Meier emphasizes that ongoing insecurity and disruptions to transportation now severely impede access to critical healthcare, safe drinking water, and food in numerous regions across the nation. Despite this challenging environment, he notes that local communities and humanitarian workers continue to demonstrate “remarkable resilience.”

The IRC reiterates its commitment to maintaining its presence on the ground, working in collaboration with local partners and authorities to continuously adapt its interventions to meet the evolving needs of the affected populations.

Mali: a largely overlooked humanitarian crisis

Mali currently represents one of the world’s most underreported humanitarian crises. Projections indicate that 5.1 million people will require humanitarian assistance in 2026, including more than 415,000 internally displaced individuals.

Throughout the country, residents contend with a confluence of exacerbating factors: armed conflicts, adverse climate events, pervasive food insecurity, and severely restricted access to basic amenities. Women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities are among the most exposed, frequently facing elevated protection risks and diminished access to essential care, potable water, and sustainable livelihoods.

adaptive interventions in an insecure landscape

In response to the rapidly changing situation, the IRC conducts continuous assessments to ensure the safe continuation of its programs. Teams operating in affected areas remain at the forefront of humanitarian operations, implementing enhanced security protocols when deemed necessary.

The organization is also developing flexible and remote service delivery mechanisms to guarantee the ongoing provision of life-saving services in areas most exposed to insecurity.

over a decade of vital humanitarian presence

Operating in Mali since 2012, the International Rescue Committee provides assistance to communities impacted by conflict and forced displacement, particularly in regions where basic services are non-existent or severely disrupted.

The organization implements programs across several key sectors, including health, nutrition, protection, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), as well as economic recovery initiatives. Despite significant access challenges, its dedicated teams persist in their efforts alongside local communities in some of the country’s most isolated regions.

Founded in 1933, the IRC currently operates in over 50 countries and 28 American cities, committed to assisting populations affected by humanitarian crises in rebuilding their lives and re-establishing dignified living conditions.
