The Constitutional Council of Senegal has declared itself unable to rule on the parliamentary status of Ousmane Sonko, the country’s second-highest-ranking official. This unexpected decision has triggered swift condemnation from the Front for the Defense of Democracy and the Republic (FDR), which issued a formal statement reaffirming the illegality of Sonko’s continued position.

In a sharply worded response, the FDR dismissed the Council’s ruling as irrelevant, labeling it a forfaiture—a grave breach of legal and ethical norms. The coalition emphasized that citizens must resist what it describes as a blatant violation of constitutional order and the public good. The FDR also pledged to pursue all lawful avenues to mobilize against what it perceives as an assault on democratic principles.

The coalition’s leadership has vowed to take decisive action within the framework of Senegal’s legal system, announcing plans to launch a broad-based coalition. This initiative aims to unite political parties, civil society organizations, labor unions, and youth movements to forge what the FDR calls a democratic alternative to the current political landscape.
