Chad’s presence at the World Urban Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan, has yielded significant progress. The landlocked African nation has been officially added as the 11th eligible country for the Building Climate Resilience of Urban Populations (BCRUP) program under the United Nations Green Climate Fund, which previously included ten member states.

International recognition of urban climate challenges

The inclusion underscores Chad’s proactive stance in addressing pressing climate-related issues affecting its urban centers, including devastating floods, mass displacement of communities, and erratic weather patterns that disrupt city life.

Strategic partnerships and funding opportunities

During the forum, the Chadian delegation—led by Minister Mahamat Assileck Halata—held a pivotal meeting with the Executive Director of UN-Habitat. The discussions centered on urban resilience strategies and potential collaboration pathways. Following these talks, a groundbreaking project secured initial funding between $900,000 and $1 million, setting the stage for larger investments from UN-Habitat in the coming months.
