Bishop of Butembo-Beni challenges Congolese authorities over security crisis

In a solemn message dedicated to the memory of Saint Charles Lwanga and his fellow martyrs, Mgr Sikuli Paluku Melchisédech has issued a powerful critique of the current governance in the République démocratique du Congo. The Bishop of Butembo-Beni, located in the nation’s volatile eastern region, expressed deep concern over the persistent instability affecting his diocese.

The prelate did not hold back in his assessment of the political landscape, pointing to a significant disconnect between the ruling class and the general population. He observed a visible and bitter gap between the personal ambitions of politicians and the fundamental, legitimate needs of the people living in the République démocratique du Congo.

A call for peace and national reconciliation

This intervention comes at a time when political violence and social insecurity continue to plague the region. Mgr Sikuli Paluku Melchisédech’s message serves as both an appeal for peace and a demand for a more responsible political approach that prioritizes the safety and well-being of every citizen.

  • Focus on security: The deteriorating safety conditions in the east remain a top priority for the local church.
  • Political accountability: The Bishop emphasizes the need for leaders to realign their goals with the public interest.
  • National unity: The call for reconciliation remains central to the church’s mission in the face of ongoing conflict.
