Algeria is intensifying its commitment to the Sahel region by implementing concrete development projects aimed at fostering social and economic stability. Following a successful initiative in Niger, the nation is now extending its energy support to Chad.

On Monday, June 8, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb arrived in Tchad to officially lay the foundation stone for a new power station. This project is a gift from Algérie and follows the recent inauguration of another plant in Niger, which was completed in a record-breaking 70 days by Sonelgaz International.

A 40-megawatt energy gift for N’Djamena

The upcoming 40-megawatt facility in Tchad will also be constructed by Sonelgaz International. This donation is being carried out under the direct instructions of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune as part of a broader strategy to support neighboring Sahelian nations.

The symbolic ceremony for this “Algerian-Chadian solidarity” power plant took place in the Farcha industrial zone of N’Djamena. The event was co-presided over by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and his Chadian counterpart, Allamaye Halina.

During his address, Sifi Ghrieb described the project as a testament to the “unwavering political will” shared by the leaders of both nations. He noted that the initiative translates the vision of President Tebboune and President Mohamed Idris Déby Itno into a tangible strategic partnership built on mutual interests and effective solidarity.

Beyond its developmental value, Sifi Ghrieb highlighted that this event represents a pivotal shift in AlgérieTchad relations, moving from diplomatic consultation to the active execution of joint infrastructure projects. This dynamic was accelerated following President Déby Itno‘s official visit to Algérie in April 2026.

Concrete initiatives for a stronger Africa

The new power plant is expected to have a profound impact on Tchad‘s economic and social landscape by significantly increasing its energy production capacity. The Prime Minister reiterated that energy remains a fundamental pillar for national economies, essential for attracting investment, expanding industrial sectors, and enhancing the quality of life for citizens.

“Where energy is available, growth opportunities multiply,” Sifi Ghrieb remarked, adding that Algérie remains deeply convinced that effective African cooperation can drive sustainable development through projects that directly benefit the population.

He emphasized a vision of Afrique defined by productive investments and partnerships that generate local wealth for the benefit of its own people.

Algeria expands energy influence across the Sahel

The collaboration between Alger and N’Djamena is set to expand further. Upcoming strategic projects include support for a refinery in N’Djamena, joint geological explorations, seismic studies, and comprehensive training programs to share technical expertise.

The demand for Algerian energy expertise is growing across the continent. Sonelgaz International, which was recently structured to manage international contracts, is already preparing for potential projects in Côte d’Ivoire and Mozambique.

In addition to electricity, Algérie is heavily involved in regional oil and gas infrastructure. This includes operations at the Kafra oil field in northern Niger and the recent launch of the Algerian segment of the TSGP gas pipeline in Adrar, a project involving Nigeria and Niger.
