The gift of a new power plant from Algérie to the Republic of Tchad signals a transformative chapter in the diplomatic and economic alliance between Alger and N’Djamena.
On Monday, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb traveled to N’Djamena to co-preside over the foundation stone-laying ceremony for a 40-megawatt solidarity power station. Alongside the Chadian Prime Minister and Head of Government, Allamaye Halina, the event marked the official start of a project designed to cement the bonds of brotherhood between the two nations.
Sonelgaz International to spearhead the energy project
This initiative is a direct result of the strategic vision shared by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his Chadian counterpart. The ceremony included a comprehensive technical presentation detailing the engineering specifications, construction phases, and future operational goals of the facility. This infrastructure is viewed as a cornerstone for deeper energy integration in the region.
Under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, the construction has been assigned to Sonelgaz International, a subsidiary of the Sonelgaz Group. The plant will be equipped with high-efficiency gas turbines specifically intended to stabilize the electricity grid in N’Djamena and its outskirts. Representing the Algerian presidency, Sifi Ghrieb noted that the project is one of the first major outcomes of the high-level agreements signed between the two countries.
A framework for a robust strategic alliance
In his speech, Ghrieb highlighted the personal commitment of President Tebboune to supporting African neighbors in their developmental journeys. He emphasized that Algérie is dedicated to improving the daily lives of Chadian citizens through vital infrastructure. This project, he stated, “reflects a firm political will to elevate our bilateral relations to a solid strategic partnership founded on tangible solidarity and shared growth.”
“President Abdelmadjid Tebboune remains deeply committed to strengthening the ties between our peoples,” the Prime Minister remarked, adding that such cooperation is essential for building a more integrated and prosperous African continent. The project stems from the diplomatic momentum generated during the Chadian president’s official visit to Algérie in April 2026, which resulted in several ambitious cooperation programs across multiple sectors.
Advancing regional stability through cooperation
The Prime Minister also touched upon the broader continental implications of this energy project. He asserted that Algérie believes in an Africa driven by “active solidarity” and concrete investments that generate wealth for local populations. This vision aligns with other large-scale structural projects currently underway.
According to Ghrieb, both Algérie and Tchad are prioritizing major initiatives such as the Trans-Saharan road, fiber optic connectivity, and the expansion of logistical and air transport networks. These efforts are intended to end the isolation of inland regions and create new corridors for trade and investment.
African-led solutions for local challenges
Regarding regional security and politics, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the alignment of views between Alger and N’Djamena. He stressed the importance of maintaining close consultation on continental issues to ensure a unified destiny. “Our approach is rooted in the belief that we must promote African solutions to African problems while fully respecting the sovereignty of each state,” he explained.
Concluding his visit, Ghrieb renewed the pledge that Algérie will continue to stand by Tchad. On behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, he reiterated the ongoing commitment to supporting Tchad’s path toward stability, economic development, and long-term prosperity through this enduring partnership.
