Pastef-Les Patriotes, Senegal’s dominant parliamentary force, concluded its first national congress since 2014 this weekend in Dakar, marking a pivotal moment in the party’s evolution and the country’s political landscape. The two-day gathering at Dakar Arena served as a platform for Ousmane Sonko, party leader and newly confirmed president, to unveil a sweeping three-pronged strategy reshaping Pastef’s future direction.
The congress capped a period Sonko described as « the first phase of clarification », initiated after last November’s landmark rally. « Politically, Pastef remains true to itself and emerges from this process stronger, » he declared. While acknowledging « surprises and disappointments » along the way, Sonko insisted these had not personally deterred him. He proudly asserted that his movement spearheaded critical national battles: combating corruption, demanding justice, renegotiating unfair contracts, and preserving the parliamentary majority.
On governance, Sonko took direct aim at the presidency. « This country has endured enough conspiracies and schemes, » he declared, warning institutions against being manipulated to serve personal ambitions. His message was clear: « Even if the president seeks to advance political goals, no one should allow institutions to be weakened. »
Addressing concerns about potential institutional crises, Sonko reframed the narrative in electoral terms. « There is no crisis in Senegal’s institutions. The people chose who leads the presidency and who controls the National Assembly. »
Firm stance on local elections
Sonko closed all doors to any delay in local elections, grounding his position in both political conviction and constitutional procedure. « Pastef will never accept postponing local elections, » he asserted, emphasizing the legal hurdles required: « To do so, the executive must secure approval through a law passed by the Assembly. »
As the congress drew to a close, the contours of a new political reconfiguration and governance framework in Senegal appeared firmly established.
