Senegal’s political landscape is already stirring with the unveiling of the new cabinet, and one appointment in particular has raised eyebrows within the Pastef movement. Ousmane Sonko, the leader of Pastef, has voiced strong reservations about the selection of Me Moussa Sarr as the new Minister of Justice, casting doubt on whether this decision will bring stability or deepen existing tensions.

Senegal politics: Sonko's concerns over new justice minister Moussa Sarr

Sonko’s apprehension stems from Sarr’s involvement in several high-profile legal cases that have historically strained relations between Pastef and the judiciary. The appointment, he argues, does little to ease concerns within his party. « The lineup at the Ministry of Justice does not inspire confidence. This choice places a figure central to contentious legal disputes at the helm of a critical institution, » Sonko stated, underscoring the weight of his skepticism.

While Sonko has stopped short of outright rejection, his guarded optimism hinges on the minister’s forthcoming actions. « We harbor doubts, but we will observe closely. Our assessment will unfold in the Assembly, » he declared, signaling Pastef’s intent to monitor the ministry’s performance closely. The party’s leadership appears poised to take legislative action if necessary, leaving the new government’s justice portfolio under intense scrutiny.

Prime Minister in Sonko’s crosshairs

The criticism does not stop at the Minister of Justice. Sonko has also directed pointed remarks toward Prime Minister Al Amine Lô, questioning his commitment to a technocratic approach. Sonko insists that the Prime Minister should refrain from political maneuvering and focus solely on governance. « I urge the Prime Minister to remain a technocrat. He must step away from political games. His role is to govern, not to engage in politics, » Sonko emphasized.

In a veiled but firm warning, he added, « I am aware of certain actions he is taking. Out of courtesy, I have been restrained, but he should not test my patience. » The statement hints at a growing rift between Sonko and the Prime Minister, with potential implications for the government’s cohesion.

Internal party dissent surfaces

Sonko’s dissatisfaction extends beyond the cabinet. He has also taken aim at Pastef members who joined the new government without consulting the party’s leadership. Among those criticized are Balla Moussa Fofana, Ibrahima Sy, and Yankoba Diémé, who accepted ministerial positions independently. « Those who have taken seats in the government did so on their own accord. When the time comes, we will address their actions, » Sonko declared, signaling a potential internal reckoning within the party.

These early critiques highlight the fragile dynamics surrounding the new administration. However, it is the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr that remains the focal point of Sonko’s concerns, as he awaits concrete actions from the Minister of Justice to either confirm or dispel the growing apprehensions.
