The vibrant capital of Sénégal, Dakar, is set to host the 85th Executive Committee Session of the African Parliamentary Union on June 3 and 4, 2026. With delegations from nearly sixteen African nations expected to converge, Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly, has shared his vision for the landmark gathering.

In a pre-event statement, Sonko emphasized the critical role of parliamentary cooperation in addressing Africa’s most pressing challenges. He called for unity and collective action, stressing that the continent’s future must be shaped by Africans themselves, guided by shared values and mutual interests.

«At a time when our continent faces unprecedented challenges, strengthening parliamentary collaboration is not just beneficial—it is essential. I am convinced that Africa’s future will be built by Africans, rooted in respect for our heritage, aspirations, and shared goals. I hope these deliberations will advance the panafrican ideals championed by past generations, ideals to which we remain deeply committed,» Sonko declared.

This historic session marks Sonko’s first major international parliamentary engagement since his overwhelming election to lead the National Assembly on May 26, 2026, securing 99.25% of the vote (132 out of 133 ballots). With over a hundred parliamentarians—including deputies and senators—gathering in Dakar, the event underscores Sénégal’s central role in fostering continental dialogue and cooperation.
