PSG secures historic Champions League double with penalty shootout win
The Paris Saint-Germain made history on Saturday by clinching their second consecutive UEFA Champions League title, overcoming Arsenal in a tense final in Budapest.
Exactly one year after their triumph in Munich, the Parisian club once again etched their name into European football folklore by defeating Arsenal in a nail-biting final that stretched into a penalty shootout.
The match that wouldn’t end
The final kicked off with an early setback as Arsenal struck first through a goal in the fifth minute, putting PSG under immense pressure from the outset.
Down at halftime, the French champions staged a remarkable comeback, equalizing in the 64th minute thanks to a penalty converted by Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé.
The tension remained palpable through 90 minutes and 30 minutes of extra time, with neither side able to break the deadlock. It was only when the drama shifted to the spot-kick decider that PSG’s resilience prevailed, securing their second consecutive Champions League crown.
A historic double
By claiming back-to-back European titles, PSG joins an exclusive club. Only Real Madrid, under the guidance of Zinedine Zidane, had previously achieved this feat in the modern era of the competition, winning three consecutive titles from 2016 to 2018.
Road to the World Cup begins
Six French internationals featured in the 71st Champions League final—Lucas Hernandez, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Désiré Doué, Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembélé (PSG), and William Saliba (Arsenal)—are set to reunite with the French national team at Clairefontaine for World Cup preparations. A friendly match against Ivory Coast is scheduled for June 4 at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes.
