Gabon court denies release request for detained opposition leader
Gabonese opposition figure Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze remains behind bars after a Libreville appeals court on Tuesday dismissed his request to nullify the legal proceedings against him. His legal team has condemned the detention as arbitrary, citing irregularities in the judicial process.

Appeals court upholds detention order
Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze, a prominent critic of President Brice Oligui Nguema, has been held in custody since April 16 while facing allegations of embezzlement and fraud dating back to 2008. On Tuesday, the Libreville appeals court rejected his defense team’s motion to dismiss the case, leaving him confined to prison. His lawyers argue that the accusations are time-barred and lack credible legal foundation.
Legal team cites due process violations
In an official statement, Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze’s attorney, Me Arthur Vercken, condemned what he described as a ‘serious breach’ of Gabonese law and fair trial guarantees. The opposition party Ensemble pour le Gabon claims their leader was detained under ‘harsh conditions’ and denied access to legal counsel during the initial hours of his custody before being formally remanded.
President denies executive interference
President Brice Oligui Nguema has dismissed suggestions of government involvement in the case. ‘This is a private matter; I have no role in it,’ he stated in a recent interview, emphasizing the judiciary’s independence and the constitutional separation of powers. A former Prime Minister under Ali Bongo’s presidency, Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze lost to Oligui Nguema in the 2025 presidential election. His arrest followed repeated public criticisms of the administration, particularly regarding social media restrictions and nationality law reforms.
