French intelligence officer handed 20-year prison sentence in Mali

A Malian court has sentenced a French intelligence officer to two decades behind bars for alleged offenses against state security. The verdict comes amid escalating diplomatic friction between Bamako and Paris.

Espionage charges and diplomatic fallout

The French national, identified as Yann V., had been working under diplomatic cover at the French embassy in Bamako when Malian security services arrested him in August 2025. Malian authorities allege he was part of an espionage network aiming to undermine the country’s transitional institutions and orchestrate a coup d’état.

Alongside his 20-year prison term, the court imposed a 20-year ban on re-entering Mali and a fine of approximately €5,400.

French government dismisses allegations as unfounded

Paris responded immediately to the arrest by denouncing what it called baseless accusations. France suspended all counterterrorism cooperation with Mali and expelled two Malian diplomats stationed in the French capital.

Growing rift between Bamako and Western partners

This verdict follows months of deteriorating relations between Mali’s military government and its Western allies. Since the 2020 and 2021 coups, the junta has pivoted toward stronger political and military ties with Russia, distancing itself from France, its former colonial power.
