In a landmark visit aimed at reinforcing regional stability, Benin’s President Romuald Wadagni arrived in Niamey on June 2, 2026, for an official state and friendship visit to Niger. Warmly greeted at Diori Hamani International Airport by his Nigerien counterpart, General Abdourahamane Tiani, the reception reflected the growing closeness between the two nations.
Following the ceremonial welcome, the two leaders held a private meeting at the Presidential Palace in Niamey, followed by an expanded session with delegations from both countries. The discussions centered on shared priorities and pressing subregional challenges, including security threats and economic development.
Strengthening security and economic ties
In a joint communiqué released after the talks, Presidents Wadagni and Tiani celebrated the long-standing bonds of friendship and cooperation between Benin and Niger. They reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations to better serve their citizens, focusing on peace, security, and inclusive growth.
Security concerns took center stage as both leaders addressed the escalating terrorist threat across the Sahel and West Africa. They pledged to enhance joint efforts against terrorism and cross-border crime, stressing that stability is essential for implementing development initiatives in the region.
Beyond security, the two heads of state agreed to expand collaboration in politics, trade, science, and culture. A key outcome was the decision to reopen the Benin-Niger border, which has been closed due to previous tensions. To make this a reality, a joint expert committee has been formed to assess current barriers and propose solutions within two weeks.
A partnership built on mutual respect
At the end of the visit, President Tiani expressed his appreciation for Wadagni’s visit, while Wadagni praised the hospitality shown during his stay. The Beninese leader extended an official invitation to Tiani to visit Benin, an offer warmly accepted. The timing and logistics of this reciprocal visit will be arranged through diplomatic channels, signaling both countries’ eagerness to solidify their strategic alliance.
